President Tim Devaney The new year is upon us and looking ahead there are some good things in the hopper for 2012 and I am hoping to fill some big shoes. No surprise most shoes are going to be big to me, but the nice thing about stepping into those shoes is all the work the board did last year and they are all returning for another campaign. To me the most important part of this organization is the tournament chairman in providing punctual, well organized and smoothly run tournaments. Dennis Walker has improved every year on the job and developed some pretty tough skin to boot. The scoring procedure with on the spot results and our new video source in the bar is outstanding. If you have ever watched the HBO series Boardwalk Empire you noted that the city treasurer ran the town and always kept them in the black. Besides his meticulous accounting of the club funds, Vince Mitchell organized and ran meeting day lunches, organizes and captains Saturday team play and runs one of our most successful and enjoyable away tournaments in the Spring Fling. Have you noticed our online publication the” Birdie Bugler” our monthly newsletter that is starting to look more like a golf magazine with all the additions and upgrades. Mark Gallant has put everything you need to know about our golf association in it. As a member and PGA working professional in his earlier years, he plays the game with a great deal of precision, occasionally, and maintains a strong sense of integrity. He has become our critical conscience . Ken Wheeler has become the new sheriff in town and is looking forward to the challenge of maintaining club integrity among the members. The handicap chairman has the responsibility for accounting to the SCGA and must keep indexes honest . As you may know he is not afraid to speak his mind and he has already formed a handicap committee to maintain law and order. The newest member of the board was one of the influences to become a golf association and not necessarily a men’s club. The new secretary Rhonda Heffington has already been pushed into service in creating an up to date membership roster with correct information including e-mail addresses. As you know the primary use of e-mail is to communicate to the membership regarding A to Z about the club and it s the secretary’s responsibility. She will also resume the creating of the RVGA membership card identifying you as a member and a calendar of tournaments to carry around in your wallet. She is going to be a strong addition to the board. Doug Peterson comes back to the board in a working capacity as the new treasurer ,a position he held at Imperial and the first years at Royal Vista. His days of lame duck ex-president are now over as he will also take charge of the Laughlin Getaway, Vegas’ getaway , Stateline getaway or what ever getaway. We will be going across state line somewhere. And around the same time. Last , is the real lame duck president. As you might not know his position on the board is not elected, good thing for him. It must have been conceived that anybody who can last 3 years as president is entitled to sit back and say” I told you so”. To his credit Steve White created one of the biggest success turnarounds in our tournament schedule. His resurrection of the member guest into a Texas scramble turned out to be our largest and most lucrative tournament of the year. His legacy is secured. And now you may ask about my role. Not a lot left to do. Just stay out of their way and keep the drinks coming. Here’s to a happy and prosperous new year. |
